Yes, kids certainly are smarter. My daughter is past that stage now. She is now very protective of her younger brother.
No matter what kind of mood she is in, she is the first one to rush to his side as soon as he cries.
Each child reacts in a different way to the same situation. She managed to handle this situation better than we thought. Touchwood...

Hi...its me again and probably i am reverting on quite an older post, partially my miss that haven't been back here for quite a while...
anyways firstly congratulations on the perfect family, a girl and a boy as most of them love they had it that way. Saying this, let me add, not-saying any other combination to be not-so-perfect as its all relative.

What really prompted me to put in here was one to convey best wishes and other on the last part that if the elder one at 6 was treating the baby as any doll... i would think not so true, not when at 6 as i did see instances of 3 yr old ones taking just borns carried in strollers to be perhaps dolls, from the way they were playing with them as against with real dolls.
Like, taking a snack or empty bottle of milk near the face and taking it off back quickly, same way with both real one and a doll... thinking they have given them the food they need and that the doll or which ever has also had it to its hearts content : )

However, with the 5+ ones you would see them trying to make sure the baby is indeed having what they have to offer (even a hard krack-jack or parle-G!) as they think a baby can have anything that they themselves can bite on and understand they have to actually bite-on to say have had it, and give that additional time to baby when offering unlike with a doll that they know doesnt really bite and do not give that time when offering. However, they fail to understand that the baby is not capable of biting it on (no teeth, what they cannot see aparently) and when attempting, the parent has to run to rescue and make the elder one learn about the fact.

Just try this out by asking elder one to give out a bottle of milk to baby and also to a doll next to it and see how they react with each.
Do it with a 3 yr old or less & a 5 yr old or more...

Kids are smarter than we think...

Btw, does saying all this by me seem like i have about a couple of kids running around in my house!

Ha ha... i am not even wishing to that end... with the one at 4 this Dec, that i have being the best little cutie i (rather 'we' with spouse) could ever have!.

I certainly agree with you, doctor should be good whether he is from city or from remote . Personally experienced with the incident of Murali uncle , when my father treated him when he got the heart attack first time. I came know how important a doctors decission at that time.

Firstly Congratulations on baby joining your family.

Talking about doctors by and large skill wise they all may not be less but with skill doctors seem to have forgotten the benefits that come with dealing with any child birth naturally.

Why the doctors in India tend to suggest operative way of Child birth than to let it take
its time and course and to let it happen naturally?

Atleast all the Child births in my circle that i known to have happened in India were not natural and did not happen so at the discretion of doctor!

Is it to show their skill? or for personal profile development or for better financial returns due to operative costs or for what do they suggest operative way and always without even giving it a chance to happen naturally?

I would say this as i do not see the same trend in US!... even if the expecting insist they want it operative way as they can't wait more.
Unless medically required, operative way is a discouraged mechanism in US inspite Medical Insurances, a must - being there who cover all costs!

I am not a privileged women to be able to write more around this topic but having been a witness to my own daughters birth and wife's journey through the course with no other support than me, can say for sure
that any woman would love to have a natural birth as it comes with benefits of quick recovery post birth to say the least.

So, in choosing the Right doctor, i may not want to be picky as from City or from a remote town, but i would certainly want to check the doctors trend in births handled being natural or operative especially if the doctor is an Indian.

Part 3 of 3:

I’ll conclude with my own experience here & promise would try to put it short.
My nearing 3 yr old (by dec’09) was eligible for these two pre-schools in the town
and while one was nearer and within budget, other was far and over the budget.

Initially, got her into both the places on an alternate days of week basis starting
with farther one for Mon/Wed, nearer one for Tue/Thu…. (Fri thru Sun, my little one gets her offs… :)

So Mon, Tue being First days for each new place she ran into the pre-school.
Wed also she was good. Thu, she was good when starting at home, (as she has no idea where she is heading to…) and the moment she was dropped at the Thu-school, expressions turned blue. We thought it was usual school-sick kind of thing as with kids as it was her first week and continuous 4th day.

Following week, Monday went well… we were glad & Tue, same scene as last Thu,
Good at start from home, and things change when dropped at Tue/Thu-school.
Resistance became stronger that day. We forced her in (sorry dear), as we had to, taking it to be the usual school-sick
that started early being second week, second day.

First trigger to us when she didn’t resist the next day, Wed when dropped at Mon/Wed-school. Thought, she was now getting used to may be.

But the thought didn’t last long, as the very next day, at the Thu school… it was beyond control. We still forced her in though it was hard.

Not surprising thou, I get a call from the school half an hour later staying my daughter to be sick and that she needs to be picked up immediately. I ask them, sick or crying?. They respond sick, while I knew it could be do to with unmanageable crying.

I rushed to the school with my wife and tell them I want to see her what she is doing without her noticing us.
I was shocked to see my daughter as never before… means just sitting idle in one corner of the room and as if waiting to see parents pick her up, while she is never like that normally and is always playful amongst other kids.

The other thing I noticed is almost all kids were crying and the care-taker is doing nothing but having the most crying kid in her arms. So, with this kind of scene around, my kid is also ‘influenced’ to behave unusually ‘dull’.

We took her off the place and from there I drove her directly to the other school though she wasn’t scheduled for that day.
Can you believe what happened? My daughter actually ran into the school to start playing and played next 3 hours until she
was all tired. So… is she really sick by health? NO! She is sick of the earlier place! Sick of that other Tue/Thu school!
When the school people called me to pick her up staying ‘Sick’, they didn’t realize she was ‘Sick’ of their place! and so
behaved like that but not sick health wise! Or, how could she joyfully play other 3 hours when she was taken directly
to other school from this school? I precisely wanted to check this myself and so drove her to other school thou it was not
her scheduled day!

So, learning is… even a less than 3 yr old who cannot speak has a preference that she/he will be able to communicate which
we need to understand and so we need to try & give a choice pro actively to help them communicate to us.
If only I never tried two different places, how would my daughter ever be able to communicate she liked one better than other
and how would I ever know there is a better place for her than what was nearer to our place!

As the age grows into 5+ or so, ready for junior schooling, kids are even better at being able to communicate their preferences.
So, parents please do involve them early in life in decision making, in having choices and to let think through in deciding on.
You can always cross validate their reasoning, if they have one… and adjudge. Believe in that if you think you cannot go wrong,
your kids with your blood cannot go wrong too!

Part 2 of 3:

I have these steps to suggest to help, get a feel of what our kid really likes and to help them be able to answer to our question around which school they like.

1. Involve your kid in your selection process
2. Take them with you when you go for getting that application…

I know it’s easier to pick it on the way to office or back home… but you are missing
‘Introducing’ the school to your kid with that!

3. Try taking the kid round the school, its serenity, the class rooms, play ground & let me also add, rest rooms by visiting ourselves to check their hygiene levels.

4. Have your kid interact with couple of teachers and better yet if with the same teachers
she/he would interact with after joining.

5. Leave them to themselves, overlooking anonymously to observe and get a feel of how
your kid is feeling at the place, overall. You have to anyway leave them for 6 or 8 hrs
at the school once joined & can’t observe, so better do now when you can and observe.

6. Let them interact with other kids in similar age group, or with their possible co-class mates if most of them are at the school with parents, the same day.

7. Try taking them there a second or third time (all before joining & to different places)
just as a surprise, to check if they are resisting or liking (how excited they are) to re-visit the place.

Back to analogy, it’s like in the process of finding a suitable life-partner, how best, comfortable and original are we finding ourselves at the presence of a different person
that we are trying to check for ourselves!

In a way, parents try to get a feel of these themselves, but ensure you kid is also getting feel of it and try to understand your kids impressions, right there and as they are when
out of that place and as they take shape in comparison with places they eventually get
to see in the process.

As far as possible, try to keep an alternate open for at least initial one or two months, (even if it costs a little more) to ensure your kid is still thinking the first choice to be the right choice and that you are also convinced with the decision, noticing a real learning curve in the kid having started going to that school, finally joined.

Part 1 of 3:

Great, this article is good in that it factored in 'Most' of the aspects parents
generally think of when considering a school for their kids. I can say, a good reference
for aspects to consider and not miss out on any, for anyone considering admitting their kid(s?) into a school.

But… hold on… I said ‘Most’ and not ‘All’ as I have a few to add that I can think
of to be Most Important. Even with this, it may not be ‘All’ as readers might certainly have more to add!

Coming to point, Now, in thinking through aspects to consider, we tend to normally think through from ‘parents side’ of it like, nearness to home to drop/pick, budget and think we are thinking through from ‘kids side’ of it by considering or having considered, class strength, teaching methodology, other parents feedback and ‘assume’/’hope’ our kid would like what we decided for them.

The big question now is… Did we factor in to check with our kid if they have any preference in school or if they liked one more than the other?

An analogy is about parents factoring in checking with an eligible-daughter/son before
deciding on ‘life-partner’ for her/him.

One could ask, how is the kid supposed to know and answer to this question (even if asked) even before joining the school? If that is the case, taking the same analogy, I would question, how are we deciding on a ‘life-partner’ even before having ‘lived-in’?
Aren’t we still ‘kids’ to our parents even at the eligible-age? So, why we think our parents should check with us in the case of life-partner for us? And if we think they should, do we know if our kid is expecting the same from us in the case of school for them?

If you thought at the eligible-age they are able to think for themselves & reason out what’s right and at the kids-age they are not capable of, and so it’s makes sense to check with them at the eligible-age and not at kids-age, then I bet you are wrong!

I bet, even a kid who doesn’t have a ‘word’ in her/his vocab, i.e., who hasn’t yet learned
how to speak, has preferences to make given a choice and is capable of ‘Communicating’ the preference if not by literally speaking! Having said, then it’s all about how much of a choice we as parents are able to give and how much of our kids way of communicating, we are able to understand!. Hope the reader got this writers point here!

I understand it’s difficult as mostly we assume our kid might answer ‘I don’t know’, to a question around which school they like, but who knows if they actually have an answer, specifically pointing to a particular school and may or may not be able to reason/speak out why they thought one to be better than other even without having joined either of them!

While it’s a kind of challenge to get our kid into a school we thought ‘perfect’ it’s a
Bigger challenge if you realize the kid actually dislikes the school or the decision
we made for them and comes back home telling ‘I don’t like that teacher daddy…’
or even worse resists from going there next day onwards.

We would be ruining their learning curve with a wrong decision for them or by forcing
them with our decision.

Just think, when we, even at this age, if we could make a wrong decision (at times) for ourselves by joining that Company where we thought we will have a great career… and later realized that it wasn’t the right decision, how accurate could we be when deciding for our kids? It may not be always the case or with everybody but the point here is to drive the need to factor in this thought and to factor in how to avoid seeing a situation we don’t want ourselves or our loved ones to be in.

The real estate is one sector that features as one of the most badly hit sectors following the global economic meltdown. Especially in developing countries like India, where real estate was going great guns, so to say, faced a steep downfall following the recession and inflation. Especially in the metros and the developing cities like Bangalore, real estate suffered dearly as the demand for the residential units, though increasing became a pent up demand. The badly hit economy particularly the IT sector that has a strong foothold in Bangalore, and the high rates of interest in home loans made the demand for residential units go down or at best become a pent up demand. It is believed that once the situation stabilizes the demands would start surfacing. Another very problematic issue that the real estate dealers are facing is that patrons of the currently booked flats are not willing to pay the original price that they had agreed on but the current price that is less than the original amount owing to the current economic condition. Not only the residential units but the commercial properties like the hotels in Bangalore have also naturally seen a drop in their occupancy. The ITC hotels in Bangalore that registered the highest occupancy, as high as 83%, have been forced to cut down on their tariffs by almost 20% as the occupancy has also gone down by 20%. On the contrary, the business hotels in Bangalore are surviving the tough times as the number of business travelers has not been affected as hard as the umber of leisure hotels. The budget hotels in Bangalore have seen a hike owing to the obvious reasons.

That should hve been a great pleasant surprise.

Wonder what... on a very similar note, just about
recently for my birthday itself when we invited two of our family frnds for an get together, their little daughter about 4+ yrs, gave me a birthday wishes card that wasn't purchased... but handmade thru her drawings with crayons and such. It was her simple fuzzy drawings with crayons on a hard paper and folded with edges colored too... & i was so very pleased and thankful to this little girl..! & so shud u hve been seeing that of ur own daughter.

Btw... what was most funny in her card.. was it said:
ANCLE, Happy Birthday. (and then 'A' was overwritten with 'U.'. soo.. original). Yes, such ones are tresures of life.

On this note, i can tip-off to reading parents that
at every occasion that we could, we can hand-make or atleast buy cards for our kids and give/surprise them... ,
like for their birthdays, or when they did great at that school function, or when they scored a cent in math that puzzled us!:) or for that matter for anything...
just if we liked their smile and cheek!..when they
had that mouthful icecream!

Mind u... they dont hve to turn 4 or 5 for us to start giving them these...!
They can be even 4 months or Just Born! (as i did one to mom & just born daughter then!) and treasure it now for their sake, which when they are at an age that they can understand..would love us more and treasure them dearer.... rite?

Talking about school functions
or even functions for our kids
at home, i could concur to the
point that we indeed need to
probably plan it out a month
or two in advance based on my
own experience this very month.

To share: just that i wanted to
have physical invitation cards printed out & invite personally for daughters second birthday this month (r'ther than shooting out just an e-mail or s'ndng web-soft-invitation) that the printers estimated at a total 21 days for printing and shipping.

I said, '21 days??' for printing cards?

During the days when m'rages are planned and done in about 2 weeks!, 21days for cards
wasn't in the scope, with birth-day itself in about a weeks time.

May be, the elevated estimate is due to the Christmas and holiday season here... but what ever be the case that forced me to put my
innovative skills to test and execution to still come up with a physical inv card determined that i am to make it... & nonetheless it was an learning experience,
& thanks to all-that as the hand-made one was much appreciated.

Hand-making crds for so many sounds Crazy, maybe!
But I didn't think of it as, 'do i have to hand-make so many for so many invities? and is it worth
the time/energy going into, with the bday within a week?',
also knowing i wudn't want to hand-make for anyone unless i love them or so..., but i thought of it as what i am doing as a 'Gift' to my daughter and for her birthday!,
& b'cos obviously i love my little cute daughter!

She's sooo little to know of this now that, may not even understand of this at this time and age, (further to add, wud piece-make/tear & bother falling over while busy with making these
if not kept out of reach...:), But with time, when she realizes of this, of what her parents did for her, she wud sure love us - parents for life!

In this electronic-age, our generation has photos, vedios and what not to take/preserve and show to our kids as they grow up. What did our parents hve at their time to preserve for years and show up to their kids(us) as we grew?
but for memories alone and alone with them?

Given that, one doesn't have to prove their love for others by showing anything and that it grows naturally anyway... but point is, if we forgot or were at an
age when we weren't enough to remember!, believe me... our parents too did everything that they could for us, b'cos they love us more than we do them...
and so dear readers...love them and take care of them too by giving back a little time of
ours everyday, as much as we want to give it to our spouse & kids!

Imagine… if u were shown a vedio of ur dad or mom hugging u close to heart Or when playing with u, like a kid, or of Mom making that great sweet cake at home for ur birthday!, Or vedio showing the day they surprised U with ur dream Gift!, or of dad’s best efforts in arranging finances for your admission into in that high profile college or just to send u to US for a job or to just get you married off to this well deserving groom, u love!.... and the list goes on…. : won’t that remind us of how much we owe them back?
